The chapter examines Japanese not merely as a tool for transmitting information, but as a language for expressing the self. Through grammar, subject omission, particles, honorifics, onomatopoeia, mimetic words, and context dependence, it explores how Japanese conveys thought processes, sensory impressions, relationships, and the atmosphere surrounding communication.
