青蓮院門前の楠木は豪壮で素晴らしい。京都で好きな樹のひとつだ。隆々とした根の合間を苔が覆うのも、背景に寺の白い漆喰壁が伸びるのも良い。 同程度の樹齢でも、桜の樹肌は藻類で覆われて黴が生えたような古色が強くなり、朽ちたような脆さを感じる。それに対し、楠木は肌理の凹凸が細かいままに太い枝を水平方向に展開する。生命力に満ちているというか、若々しいというか。
