小学生の夏休み。母の実家のある栃木県藤岡市に行くのが楽しみだった。 祖母は旧い長屋の質素な家に住んでいた。土間があって、お風呂は離れに据えられた檜の樽風呂、夜は古い桐箪笥のある二階の部屋に大きな蚊帳を吊って眠りについた。 カブトムシがいるような田舎ではないけれど、夕方の渡良瀬川を渡る風はいつも心地よかった。盆には送り火とナスやキュウリで作った精霊馬を各々の家で行う風習が東京育ちの僕には新鮮だった。 夏には恒例だった花火大会が中止となって20年。街は過疎化が進み、往来を歩く人影も旧道沿いの商店もほとんどなくなってしまった。 老いた母と渡良瀬川を眺める時間もこれからどのくらい持てるだろう。 新開橋…
